About RepoPicks Radar
What it is
RepoPicks Radar follows, every day, the open-source projects that are trending on GitHub and explains each one in plain language. Every project gets a card that says what it does, how easy it is to install on Windows, Mac and Linux, which risk signals were found, always with the evidence, and, when there are any, which paid programs it can replace.
GitHub brings together millions of open-source projects, but it was made by people who code, for people who code. Its pages are technical, almost always in English, and they do not always make it clear whether you can just download the program and use it. Radar bridges that gap: it shows what is growing, what installs by just downloading and opening it, and what still asks for developer tools, before you download anything.
Who it is for
For two kinds of people.
People who code and want to follow what is coming up without opening dozens of tabs. The rankings show the fastest-growing projects, the most downloaded and the newest arrivals, with filters by category, system, cost and ease.
People who do not code and just want a free program that solves a problem: editing photos, trimming a video, reading a PDF, getting rid of an expensive subscription. For them, the home page opens on the “Ready to use” filter, and the site has pages of free alternatives to paid programs and guides for beginners, such as the one on how to install a program from GitHub without knowing how to code.
How the cards are made
Every day, Radar reads public data from GitHub: stars, downloads of published releases, recent updates and new projects that are starting to get attention. These numbers feed the rankings and the star history on each card, updated around 02:00 UTC (11 pm in Brasília).
Projects go through automatic checks that look for known risk signals and keep the evidence for each signal found. Then an AI writes the card from that data and from what the project itself publishes on GitHub, following rules set by Radar, and an AI review goes over the text. Radar checks and corrects cards; the ones it has already checked carry the “Reviewed by Radar” seal. Card text is written in English and translated into Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese; evidence is shown in its original language.
Ease goes from A, which means download and open, to E, which means developers only, and it is given for each system, because a program can be simple on Linux and a lot of work on Windows. When there is something Radar could not check, the card says so.
The result is signals with evidence, not a guarantee. A card with no risk signals means the checks found nothing, not that the program is free of problems. Projects with strong risk signals stay visible, with the evidence, so you can read it and decide, but they are left out of rankings and recommendations.
Independence
Nobody pays to appear on Radar. There are no paid positions in the rankings, no sponsored cards and no seals for sale. A project gets in because it is growing on GitHub or because it is a free alternative to a paid program, and its card says what the data and the evidence show. Project authors can ask for a wrong detail to be corrected, like anyone else; a request is for fixing mistakes, not for changing what the evidence shows.
RepoPicks Radar is made by an independent founder in Brazil. Paid program names appear only to say which free program does a similar job; no maker pays to be included in these comparisons or to be left out of them.
What's next
Many good programs on GitHub still take work to install: they ask for a terminal, Python, Docker or other tools that people who do not code have never used. The next step for RepoPicks is an app that installs these programs in one click, made for people who do not code. It is still being built; when it is ready, the launch will be announced here on the site.
