Free alternatives to Snagit

Snagit is a screen capture and recording program from TechSmith. Support teams, trainers, documentation writers and people who make tutorials use it to grab a screenshot, mark it up with arrows, text and highlights, and sometimes record a short video. It is sold as paid software for Windows and Mac.

Before switching, write down the features you use every day: capturing a region or a scrolling page, delaying a capture, adding numbered steps, blurring private details, trimming a recording, or saving straight to a shared folder. Check that the new tool has an editor you are comfortable with, because some tools capture well and leave annotation to another program. Look at keyboard shortcuts, default save locations, file formats and how captures are shared. If your team keeps a library of old Snagit captures, those files may need to be exported to ordinary images first.
