Co-op Anything

cranebeaker/coop-anythingReviewed by AI

Radar found strong risk signals in this project. It stays visible so you can read the evidence, but it is left out of rankings and recommendations.

What it does

Co-op Anything is a set of instructions, skills and testing tools that you point an AI coding assistant at (Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI and others). The assistant looks for an existing co-op mod for your game, fixes it or builds one from scratch by taking the game apart, tests it with bots and packages it so friends can join over Steam. It ships an MCP server, Python sync-test tools and a directory of 230+ co-op mods. You need the game, a coding assistant and a lot of patience; results depend on the game.

How easy it is to install

D · terminal, several tools or a specific graphics card · Windows

You install Python and an AI coding assistant, register the MCP server with a terminal command, and the assistant then installs reverse-engineering and modding tools and edits game files on your PC.

  • HighInvolves another company's protection, license or terms

README "What you can co-op": "Full reverse engineering of state, saves and levels; the hardest path" with "REA, GhidraMCP, ida-pro-mcp, Frida, Cheat Engine"; FAQ: "The Steam relay uses Valve's free Spacewar test app, so nobody buys anything else"; and "Console only (PS1, PS2, N64, Dreamcast, GameCube, Wii, GBA, ...)" going through "emulator netplay". The project takes apart and changes commercial games and routes play through another company's test application; each game's terms of use and the rules on reverse engineering where the user lives cover these steps, and the card itself lists "Whether reverse engineering and modifying a bought game is allowed where you live and under that game's terms" as not verified.

  • Attentionreverse engineering of commercial games

README table "What you can co-op" lists Ghidra, x64dbg, Frida, Cheat Engine and "Full reverse engineering of state, saves and levels"; taking a bought game apart is allowed in some countries and against the game's terms of use in others. The repository says it hosts no game files and does not touch anti-cheat.

    AI review

  • Attentionai agent runs repository instructions on your pc

Quick start tells you to say "Read https://github.com/cranebeaker/coop-anything and follow AGENTS.md"; the assistant then follows instructions from this repository, installs tools and changes files in your game folder. The FAQ claims it asks before installing anything.

  • Infouses valve spacewar test app for networking

FAQ: "The Steam relay uses Valve's free Spacewar test app, so nobody buys anything else" — connections run through a Steam test application, not through the game's own servers.

  • Infoemulator and console route

README lists console games (PS1, PS2, N64, Wii, GBA...) going through decompiled PC ports or emulator netplay with PCSX2, Dolphin and BizHawk; using those needs game copies you provide yourself.

What Radar could not check

  • Whether an assistant can really produce a working co-op mod for your game, and how many hours it costs
  • How well the finished mods play, since the QA level is self-declared per entry
  • Whether reverse engineering and modifying a bought game is allowed where you live and under that game's terms
  • What the assistant actually installs and changes on your PC while it works
  • Whether the Steam Spacewar relay keeps working for this use
