TOTK PC Recomp

valentderah/totk-pc-recompReviewed by AI

Radar found strong risk signals in this project. It stays visible so you can read the evidence, but it is left out of rankings and recommendations.

What it does

TotK Recomp rebuilds The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Nintendo Switch) into a program that runs directly on Windows, with a Vulkan renderer, 60 fps by default, custom resolutions, ultrawide support and keyboard, mouse or gamepad controls. No game data comes with it: a setup program asks for the base game and the 1.2.1 or 1.4.3 update dumped from your own console, and builds the game once on your PC. The README says it is early development, playable but with visual bugs and crashes, and needs about 36 GiB free during setup.

How easy it is to install

C · install 1 or 2 tools · Windows

  • Windows C
  • Linux D

Windows is the platform it is made for: you unpack TotK-Setup-<version>-windows.zip, run the setup, point it at your game files and wait for it to build, but those files have to come from your own console first and the README says it will not explain how to get them, and you also need Windows 10+, an AVX2 processor, a Vulkan 1.3 graphics card with VK_EXT_external_memory_host and 36 GiB free. Linux has a 210 MB AppImage in the releases, yet the README still lists "Linux and the Steam Deck" under Planned and gives no Linux instructions at all.

Risk signals (5)

  • Highruns a commercial game from console files you must dump

README: "No game files are included. You need your own legally obtained copy of Tears of the Kingdom, dumped from your own console: the base game and the 1.2.1 or 1.4.3 update. Instructions for obtaining those files will not be provided." Getting those files out of a Switch means getting past the console's own protections, and the credits list hactool (a tool that unpacks and decrypts Switch content) and the Ryujinx emulator. The README adds that "the game is built from your files on your machine, so the result contains the game. It is for your own use. Do not share it", and that the MIT licence "grants nothing for Nintendo's game". Nintendo has not authorised the project, which calls itself "an independent, non-commercial fan project".

    AI review

  • Attentionlinux download without documented linux support

Releases v0.2.8 and v0.2.1 both ship TotK-Setup-x86_64.AppImage (210 MB), but the README's Features section says "The game is playable on Windows" and the Planned section still lists "Linux and the Steam Deck". There are no Linux requirements or steps anywhere in the README.

    AI review

  • Attentionearly development crashes expected

README, Status: "Early development. The game is playable on Windows; visual bugs and crashes are still expected." The repository was created on 2026-10-29, is at version v0.2.8 after 5 releases in three days, and already has 194 open issues.

    AI review

  • Attentionunsigned installer asks you to bypass smartscreen

README, step 2: "Start TotK-Setup.exe. If SmartScreen warns about an unsigned app, choose More info, then Run anyway." The installer carries no code signature, so Windows cannot tell you who built the file you are about to run.

    AI review

  • Infocode mostly written by ai agents

README: "Most of the code and documentation is written by AI coding agents (Claude Code) under the maintainer's direction; the maintainer plays every build and decides what is merged." The repository's top level includes AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md with the rules those agents work under.

What Radar could not check

  • Whether the game really plays through from start to finish, and how often it crashes
  • Whether the 210 MB Linux AppImage works at all, since the README documents no Linux support
  • Whether your own PC meets the AVX2 and Vulkan 1.3 requirements, and what frame rate you would get
  • Real disk use: the README says about 36 GiB during setup and 20 GiB afterwards, far above the 129 to 388 MB of the download
  • What the setup program does with your game files beyond building the game, which only running it would show
  • Whether saves really carry over between the 1.2.1 and 1.4.3 updates as the features list claims
